How to become an Artist?

Whether you are a photographer, a millinery, a painter, a clothing designer or a wood worker being an artist is tough with a capital T. An artist's work is always on display for criticism and critique. It's hard hearing unkind words about your design.

Every time an artist creates, a little bit of their aura is woven into that piece. For me, every piece of jewellery I make is hard for me to let go to a new owner because every piece has a little bit of me woven into the fibres of its craftsmanship. When someone says that I'll never make enough money doing what I do, or that it will be too hard of a life for me... I just listen with a kind smile knowing they are worried for me. They don't understand how I will be able to make a stable living and follow the normal traditions; pay cheque every two weeks, meet a nice boy (or girl), buy a house, get married, have babies, get promotion. I then politely ignore some of this advice. That's just not me. Try not to let other people's fears destroy your dreams. If you want it you can make a living as a painter or another type of artist, you are just going to have to work VERY hard at it. You just have to work for it. You are going to have to own it. You are going to have to want it and I can't stress having an amazing support system by your side.

As someone who doesn't go to a regular 9-5 job, as an artist and entrepreneur, you work twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. You see designs and dream up ideas ALL day long; in your dreams, in your milk swirls at the bottom of your cereal bowl, in the patterns of your calico cat's belly although the later is a rarity! You do late nights, you work on weekends and after you've been in the studio for hours and even after you step out of the studio; you are still editing photos, still brainstorming new blog posts, still dreaming up the latest collection trying to stay one step ahead of your competitors, planning storyboards for editorial creatives and all the while still trying to have an online presence and a voice on social media to keep your fans and customers happy, to keep your work out in the community and out in the world.

As an artist you have to believe in your self, have self motivation, dedication and perseverance. You have to weed through all the media, all the background noise coming at you saying you have to live to work.... As an artist I want to work to live. Life doesn't have to be for everyone about putting on a pin stripe suit, reading the paper on a morning commute and getting a steady pay cheque. As an artist making a living can sometimes be super hard! Sometimes you have to move back in with your parents when you can't pay the rent and maybe you have to eat non organic food for a few months until your next collection launches. As an entrepreneur your always going to pick yourself back up and preserver if you believe in yourself, because the pay out is so worth it in the end. If you find it a struggle to support yourself with your craft try pointing your skills in a different direction. Try launching a new collection which gives your current customers something to come back to your site or your store for. Instead of just offering necklaces, try expanding your lines, what about rings, hand chains, or back necklaces? Perhaps your creativity needs a different outlet or venue. For years I had been doing my every day collection of Hattitude jewellery and one day I got commissioned to do a wedding and it sparked an idea growing from there. I went from doing local craft shows, to doing bridal trade shows in downtown Toronto.  I changed up my angle and my target market and the money has followed. One day you may see your hard work make its way onto the front cover of a magazine (mine did last May!), someone walking down the street wearing a piece of your clothing or your painting shown in a prestigious gallery.

An artists perseveres, struggles and makes it their own. When someone asks you what you do and you stutter a bit and choke on the words "I mmmm ake jew...elleryyy". You have to own it, after a few years of owning my own company, I now respond with "I'm a jewellery designer, specializing in wedding designs for bridal parties" instead of the former response. Own what you do as an artist. Because you as an artist are fantastic. And you are unique. Follow through on your dreams. Change up your angle. Never give up. And embrace it.
Live. Play. Create. Own.

eighty's crop tops

Outfit details-
Skirt: Vintage
Top: Sentamentalist vintage clothing in London, ON
Purse: Vintage, Chez thrift, bolton
shoe: Seychelles

I love tie cropped eighty shirts, and long flowy skirts, I guess that's why I've featured two long skirts on the blog this week. This purse is one of my favourite items. I find the shape just really neat. I also love anything navy since it's such a hard colour to find. This is a very summery outfit and makes me enjoy the last day of August. I really don't want the summer to end, but I heard September is going to be hot, which is good, since August was a bit of a rip off with how chilly it was.

I spent all this week preparing for the wedding show that I am in next weekend. As well I spent this weekend hunting down fifties attire for a creative I'm working on, an engagement editorial shoot. I'm super excited for this shoot, as of course I love the fifties! We are shooting at an old retro diner and a carnival fair. FUN.

I hope you are all headed to somewhere with a beach this weekend with the heat! My lad and I have special anniversary plans out of town.
Have a wonderful long weekend.

p.s. don't forget to check out my bridal boutique click here or my regular jewellery online shop click here for some new vintage upcycled pieces that went up on the shop this week. I'm quite bug eyed for this necklace (wink wink) www.GotHattitude.com

a field full of sunflowers

Outfit Details:
Dress: Thrifted, The Sentamentalist, London ON
Belt: Mothers
Sweater: Grandmothers
Necklace: Handmade by me, Hattitude Jewellery

I thought my neighbours farm field was the perfect place to take this photo since this outfit reminds me of a farm girls dress. It reminds me of Little House on the prairie a little. My boyfriend bought me it last week at a local thrift store in London, Ontario and I've been living in it ever since. It just is so easy to wear. I love it with a little yellow anchor necklace that I handmade from a vintage brooch. Summer is still here after all!
My neighbours are the sweetest people and have a huge sunflower field and a beautiful wheat field. I was scouting out locations for my wedding creative shoot, that they have graciously allowed me to shoot in their backyard, that I am organizing for tomorrow afternoon. I can't wait for the shoot! I'm so excited to make some beautiful photos and create a love story through images. I am working with the very talented Samantha Hurley of samanthahurleyimaging.com photography.

a vintage man's vest and a cute bow tie

Outfit details:
Dress: Frilly Lizard
Shoes: San Francisco
Vest: Vintage
Necklace: Handmade by me, Hattitude jewellery

This necklace is a faux leather bow tie, with a heart shaped pendant and an old vintage gold button on the necklace. I love this necklace. It's VERY unique and I usually get a lot of compliments on it.
As for socks...Do you like the sock look that's been trending on the blogs lately? I love wearing knee highs or fun ankle socks! My boyfriend bought me some awesome socks, hamburger and french fries in love...pardon? AMAZING. I can't wait to sport them on the blog to show you. We had a lovely day walking around downtown where we live since he got the day off of work and it just so happened to turn into a BEAUTIFUL day.

I hope you all have been enjoying your summers. It's been a few weeks since I've last posted. Summer time is SO busy. I went to two weddings last weekend. One of my second cousins got married and my boyfriend's sister got married. They were two of the most beautiful weddings. It really was a lovely lovely time.

a toy soldier kind of outfit

Outfit details:
Pants: Vintage
Suspenders: Thrifted
Shirt: Dear Creatures, San Francisco
Jacket: Vintage, Victoria, BC
Purse: Vintage, Grandmothers

I've been travelling like crazy this month. We calculated it, and I have spent a total of 6 nights in my apartment. Between Toronto, San Francisco, Caledon and London I have had little time to spend at home! It is so nice to be in the comfort of my own home again. I did some spring closet cleaning today. I found so many gems that I had forgotten about as they were shoved to the back of my closet. I put away all my winter woolies inside my trunk that sits at the end of my bed ready for next year to come.

I love this outfit for the fun. It reminds me of a toy solider. The blouse is so cute and I was lucky enough to get it in San Francisco at a sample sale from an independent designer, Dear Creatures. If you have not checked them out click here to go to their site. I am a girl all about the little details so I adore the bow they put on this blouse...of course I'm a HUGE cat fan so who could not swoon at the print!

This jacket is one of my favourites! I love the leather and old badges on this jacket my boyfriend and I picked up at a thrift store out in British Columbia. One of my favourite things is to collect articles of clothing from places that I have travelled. They become my souvenirs. What do you collect when you go away on holidays?

may is cystic fibrosis month

Outfit Details:
Shirt: Banana Republic, Gift
Pants: Vintage
Belt: Vintage
Loafers: Walking on a cloud
Jewelry: Hattitude hand made jewellery. Click here for shop

Today is the first day of May, which means it's the first month of Cystic Fibrosis awareness month. Click here to find out more about this deadly disease.

Love love love this shirt my boyfriend bought me. The fabric is so soft against your skin and the pattern is out of this world. I love the bright colours. The boy has good taste! I always like to wear a high waisted pant and I happened across this perfect matching belt. Sometimes I go TOO matchy poo in my items. I hope this one wasn't too much for your tastes!

Still working on getting my ankle fixed so I could only hobble up to my rooftop to take photos. Still a nice change of scenery. It was breathtakingly beautiful today. Very hot and sunny. I took out some San Francisco books today from the library. I head there next Thursday. Super excited. Do you have any suggestions for me to see while I'm in San Francisco?

Mustard walls and mustard skirts

Outfit Details:
Pink Martini Skirt: Lolitta, London, ON
Shirt: Clothing Swap
Sweater: Chez Thrift

I love this skirt. The colour speaks for itself. As soon as I saw that pink martini has a skirt out in mustard I knew I had to have it. If anyone knows me mustard is one of my favourite colours. I've recently convinced my mom to repaint my parents living room mustard, mind you the rest of the house is neon geen, turquoise and red, so mustard was not a far stretch.

I booked another bride today. Have you checked out my Bridal boutique. www.etsy.com/shop/hattitudejewels

Been working away here in the studio. April is a busy month. I have a number of things on the calendar! Winter keeps holding on, but alas today we had 6 degree whether and I did not have to turn the heat on in my studio space. Yippee Spring is coming... thankfully! Those electric heat bills were killing us!
Have a sunshiney Tuesday.
