Diary of WannaBe-Model

Here's to my first guest blogger, Kendra. Kendra is a gorgeous babe who has her own fashion inspiration blog, which happens to be called Fashinspiration (she's wicked cute like that haCheck it out here. Thanks Ken for writing such a GREAT post. Enjoy readers :)
I guess I’ll start off by saying how excited I am to be doing a guest blog post for a very talented fellow fashion blogger and a close friend. I have been interested in fashion for most of my life, with out even realizing it. I recently went through some of my old Barbie dolls to give them away and found all the outfits that I made for them when I was younger. I may have played with Barbies a little longer than I care to admit, but even back then I thought I could make the outfits better than Mattel… I was wrong, but I tried! And for most of my life I have been of the mindset that if I can’t find an item of clothing that I want, I try to make it instead. Then there is the mild obsession with models designer clothing. Needless-to-say, when Hattie emailed me last year and told me she was doing a fashion show to raise money for cystic fibrosis, and she wanted me to be in it, I jumped at the chance.

It was so much fun last summer to get together with a group of awesome girls to practice our model walks. I’ll admit, most of us were terrified with the prospect of putting on heels and strutting down the runway in front of hundreds of people, but we knew we were doing it for a good cause! We walked back and forth across a room while a model coach told us what we were doing wrong. Oh the judgment you have to face everyday as a wannabe model. She taught us how to do proper turns and poses, and we did them – awkwardly at first – but getting better each time. When we finally started going for fittings the week before, it really sunk in how excited I was for this fashion show.

A couple of days before the show, another friend of mine asked me to play a role in an independent film and I agreed (I like to keep myself busy). The film was being shot in an outdoor swimming pool that we did not “technically” have the rights to use. This required some fence hopping, which I’m not proud to say, I was no stranger to. The night before the fashion show, we went to do some filming. I got over the fence ok, but when I was going back over I was consumed with thoughts of a story my friend had told me about someone getting their finger stuck while fence hopping. I jumped prematurely from way too high, and landed flat on both my feet. I felt the pain immediately but hoped it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was. We filmed one more scene and then when I went to walk I realized that I couldn’t.

At the doctors the next day my face was raw from crying all night, not from pain, but from disappointment. The doctor even felt the need to ask me if I was suicidal. Seriously! No, not suicidal, but pretty damn stupid to have damaged my feet the night before I was supposed to walk in a fashion show.

I was not able to walk in the show… crutches were not a hot accessory that season. But I went anyway, and hobbled around the crowded space. The show was packed, so much so that I - on crutches - almost couldn’t get a seat! Now that’s a full house. It was an amazing show, and the only good thing about rendering myself unable to walk, was that I got to relax and enjoy seeing my friends on stage during such a wonderful night of fashion (as opposed to freaking out back stage with them.)

I don’t know the details, but it looks like we might be doing it again this year. And having witnessed it once, I can guarantee a great show. Only this time, I’m putting myself on house arrest for the week leading up to the show. However I cannot guarantee that I won’t injure myself on the runway… such is the life of the uncoordinated.

how to run a clothing swap

How to Run a Clothing swap

1. Find a place to have the clothing swap
2. Get some clothing racks (we had three)
3. Everyone hangs up their clothing, without the others knowing who's what
4. For as many pieces of clothing you brought, thats how many tags you got to write your name on
5. Everyone goes browsing.
6. After browsing, everyone goes around with their allotted tags and places them on the clothing (we pierced them through the hangers) that they wish to take (jenny had a rating system, 3 star meant you REALLY wanted it)
7. After the tag placing is done, if no one else has put tag on the item, it's automatically yours, but if there is more then one tag, you all try it on and the others vote on who it looks best on, or fits the best, etc (it usually always works out)
8. IMPORTANT --- make sure you have a TON of hangers...they're key

Swaps are awesome, since you get new goodies and spring clean your closet!

Jenny was the total winner of the night, with 43 new items. Score

Have you guys ever hosted a swap? How did you do yours?

This outfit I wore out on the weekend to one of my best friends birthday parties. It was at her mom's lounge in Woodbridge. Really great place, and ALWAYS have so much fun there at Tappa's lounge.

I love this dress for the comfortableness, and the fact that it's long so I can wear whatever shoes my little dancing feet so desire. That whole 'pain is beauty' motto is a bit lost on me. I never wear heels. Heels and four hours of dancing? not duable with my narrow little feet and my motto 'wear what feels right'.

What's the most painful thing you've done in the name of fashion?

Short little post today. I'm trying to get done my book club book. We are meeting next week. We're reading Memory Keepers daughter. It's quite controversial.

It's about a doctor who delivers his wife's baby in a snow storm, set in the 60's. She ends up having twins, and one child is born with down syndrome. The husband and Dr. decide to give the baby away, without telling his wife....then the story takes off.

Has anyone read the Hunger games series? I read the first book in the trilogy while I was in DC, and fell in love with it! I can't wait to read the other two. A bit of Harry Potter meets Twilights love story?

1,2,3....strikes your out, at the ol' ball game!

At the national washington baseball game
waiting to buy tickets. popular
go nats go
wouldn't you rather be at a baseball game in the sun, and grass on a Sunday....
my cousin (my adopted big sis) showin' me the ropes of DC
the beautiful green field and blue sky...mother nature get to Toronto already...
It's April 23rd, and finally just today we are starting to get some warm weather in Toronto, (the photos above were taken from my DC trip last week) with a fair degree of 21, maybe, just maybe mother nature has decided to give us Torontonians a Spring after all...but with the weather we've been having, (snow last weekend) it's still not safe to say.

Dancing is on the agenda tonight. Salsa? Tango?...or the good ol' fashion waltz? Oy. I wish! I have no clue how to do any of those, and any attempts at salsa dancing in the past have lead to a not so graceful leave from the dance floor.

A purple highwaisted flowy skirt is on the fore front for today? Oui.

I'd much rather be back in DC at the baseball game outside with the sun shining on my face picking wild flowers along the sidewalk...I heard it's 27 degrees down there...seriously? blargh. I'm beginning to forget what summer and heat is like! Today is such a weather tease!

Water for Elephants

I saw Water for Elephants premiere last night at the Rom...melt [Robert Pattinson]. It is one of my favourite books, so maybe I am biased as to why I enjoyed the film so much.

Everyone needs to see the movie just for the pure pleasure of seeing the circus for what is used to be in the 30's.

I saw cirque de soleil a few summers ago, and was sitting on the edge of my seat...but I'm a vintage girl through and through and loved every moment of watching this 30's projection of circus and film on the screen. [I also wanted to wear every high waisted trouser and silk evening gown outfit Reese Witherspoon sported - minus the leotard ones]

Best performance goes to August, the owner of the Benzini Brothers 1930's circus. He was spectacular.
