Weddings

Weddings are lovely.
It's amazing that two people can find each other in this crazy world and actually think, you know what, yes I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I want to wake up every day and be with you. You're my best friend. I love you. Let's tell the world you're mine and I'm yours. Let's get married.

I did my first wedding of the year in 2011. The bride was Gorgeous and a real pleasure to work with. She loved all my creations and told me to just go for it.

We looked at her dress, which was divine, simple yet sexy. It looked like a little slice of heaven had fallen off and wrapped her up in the dresses fabric. Then I looked at her shoes, which were awesome gladiator style with stones embedded.

She had envisioned for her jewellery, boho chic, with turquoise and greens colours. Since she was getting married in Mexico, a beach theme was to be apparent in the jewellery. To reflect this woman's awesome attitude and beautiful exterior I put my thinking cap on and started designing. Gold chains, copper chains, square plates, seahorses, shells from florida, old vintage shell earrings, turquoise antique beads, with new limey green shells. From all this creative thinking, earrings a bracelet and a necklace were born.

Here are some shots of them. More photos of them on the beautiful bride are coming soon!

a love letter

here is a modern day love letter in the age of science.

Be My Valentine, beloved XX carrier

Dearest, sweetest, potential long-term partner,

Valentine’s Day is coming up on Monday and I hope that you will agree to see me again. I’ve enclosed a box of chocolates in a desperate attempt to release endorphins in your brain and confuse you momentarily into thinking that you are happy to be hearing from me.

Remember the party where we first met? It was a summer night and we were in a mutual friend’s backyard. I saw you before you saw me – my male amygdala responded to the visual stimuli more quickly than your female one – but you couldn’t help but notice me when I approached. You introduced yourself and then a light breeze ruffled your hair, carrying your scent into the air. In turn, my olfactory receptors were able to verify that, at that moment under the moonlight, you were not ovulating. I smiled awkwardly. “Do you know where the bathroom is?” I said, looking back toward the house before walking away.

The next time we ran into each other we were both on our way out of the gym. With my testosterone levels raised, I very much wanted to engage in criminal activity, do something else anti-social, or maybe have a heart attack. But I also wanted to have sex. Your own increased testosterone was binding with your estrogen receptors, so you accepted my invitation to get a drink. After we’d sat down, I concentrated on your face for the first time and my breath was taken away. “You are the most symmetrical woman that I’ve ever seen,” I told you, and you blushed.

Later that night, I walked you home and as we stood outside your apartment, you ran your finger lightly along my right cheekbone, tracing a scar, becoming more attracted to me as you imagined the brave masculine spirit that I must possess to have taken on some wild animal to protect those that I love. (That had really hurt a few years before when I tripped over my collector’s edition He-Man action figure and fell face first onto Castle Grayskull.) Next thing I knew, we were in your bed assessing each other’s waist-to-hip ratios and body-fat percentages.

That night, and for the next two weeks, we engaged in the activity unique to our species, bonobos, chimpanzees and dolphins – mating with no intention of procreation – and it wasn't long before I had hopelessly and 100 per cent fallen into a dopamine addiction.

Then came the day that I called you and you didn’t call back. A week passed. You had me wrapped around your finger like a prairie vole, one of the few mammals that, like humans, have the ability to associate the pleasure of oxytocin release in the brain to a specific partner. I remember drinking half a bottle of Scotch and cursing at a photograph of you on my iPhone. “I wish you exhibited a response like the prairie vole, but you must be more like a rat,” I spat. “A rat can feel pleasure without chemically attaching it to another living creature.” It hurt me to say that.

As the days wore on, I couldn’t imagine never limbically resonating with you again. I stalked you. I visited places I knew you’d turn up. My friends told me I was crazy, but I decided then that if loving you was akin to having obsessive compulsive disorder, then I didn’t want my serotonin levels to be as high as the average test subject who did not report that he or she had formed a relationship in the past 17 months. If that’s wrong, so be it.

When you finally did get in touch last week, you intimated that the volume of vasopressin secreted from your pituitary gland was not enough to form an attachment to me, and who am I to disagree? I saw you on the street talking to some guy who is an inch or two taller than me – and maybe you deserve someone of a statistically higher status – but it’s not like your lips are exactly half the width of your face at mouth level. Sorry, I don’t really mean that. I don’t know what to say. Maybe in a couple of days, when you’re slightly past the peak of your ovulation period – I remember your cycle – and become attracted to men for the longer term again, you’ll want me back. If you call, your voice will have a slightly lower pitch because you won’t be trying as hard to display your feminizing hormones, but it won’t matter.

They say love is blind. I don’t know about that, but I do know beyond any measure of doubt – or at least within a 4-per-cent margin of error – that I have been blinded by science.

Yours, an unrequited mate selection,

XY

Nomination catch up.

I just saw True Grit. Ever since the Oscar nominations came out, I've only been watching (with the exception of Parks and Recreation, Modern Family, the Office and Glee....ha) the nominated films, which you can check out by clicking here. As for movies or rentals, nominated movies are only allowed to be rented or seen in theatre until after the awards ceremony.

Total thumbs up for True Grit. I think Jeff Bridges might have my vote on best actor. Not sure if it's worthy of my vote for best picture yet. I'm still workin' through the list. It was a really great story though, amazing acting and all around great film to sit and watch on a Friday afternoon.

I'm excited to see James Franco and Anne Hathaway host the Oscars. They have been doing some cute skits. It's the first time in a number of years, I think something like 40 years, that the person who is hosting the Oscars at the same time is nominated for an award. Come on James Franco! (although sorry, Bridges gets my vote this year I think)

This is the Oscar Party I threw last year with some of my girlfriends.
KC, Brit, and Tash do it up in fur shawls on our red carpet!
My Mom joins in on the fun.

no pictures, no pictures!

Kath and Cait make a statment as they walk on the red carpet. The entrance to the party.

Do it Yourself Design

I've been thinking up a "make and take" or "Do it Yourself Design" jewellery party. Where the jewellery party consists of you getting a chance to make your own necklace. Helping design the style, pick out the colours and beads and bringing or choosing what old brooch or earring you want included in your piece.
Hattitude at a home jewellery party the end of January. What a lovely afternoon.

I think it's a great idea. There would be three different stations and you'd have a pen and pad to write down your choices and then I would create the piece for you once you're done finished designing it yourself.

It'd be fun, a different way to have a jewellery party and best of all you'd get to design your own piece or bring your favourite old brooch to get re constructed into a piece of new jewellery.

It'd be a nice change from book club night. Having your girlfriends over for some wine and cheese and jewellery designing.

some beachin' necklaces!

Are you going somewhere hot for February or March?

Do you need that perfect necklace to complete your outfit with your Caribbean rum punch in hand?

Check in to the website later this week for some beachin' necklaces!

I started designing a cruise wear line. I'll be posting photos this week on the website.

We are suppose to get over 30cm of snow starting tomorrow! Mega Snow storm on it's way. I hope I can find a cheap flight to Barbados and maybe get out of this freezer?!

marco... polo

Designing, working, creating, pinching, pulling, prying....this bead, that clasp, this hook, that wire.

Over and over.

in my brain. in my fingers.

Valentines day is two and half weeks away.
Bitten by the love bug? Not this year?

My favourite thing about love day.
Getting together with my best friends and saying one thing we love best about each other.

Having frilly girly napkins with decorative plates. Drinking w
ine out of fancy goblets. Laughing at humourous antidotes for the evening.
Poking fun of old boyfriends. Reminiscing about old boyfriends.
Dreaming of new boys. Talking of present boys.
Introducing new men. Finding new men.

Blind dates. Real Dates. Fake Dates. True Dates.

Most of all perhaps I like designing jewellery for this time of year. I like picturing which boy or girl is going to purchase from the 'valentine day pretty' line.

What's their story?
What's their partner like? Blonde, Brunette? maybe a red head? Blue eyed, brown eyed, green eyed...throw a twist...maybe hazel eyed?
Are they fair skin, tanned skin, dark skinned? Are they short? or tall?

things that make me smile

Things I savour and enjoy....for the moment, for today.

sticky cotton candy fingers. because:
it means you've been to the fair.

old antique perfume bottles. because:

they are fun to pump, and look feminine sitting on your bureau.

valentines day. because:

it means love still exists in the world. cherished. inspired. found.

bargain. $5 ice figure skates.

I got a bargain deal. $5 for a pair of skates! It cost me more then that to sharpen them for the weekends festivities. Another whole $7.

It's been SO cold in Ontario these last few days. I went skating last night and it was the epitome of what Canadians are all about.
My neighbours have a farm, and this winter they have slaved away at making a rink in their field. They have created a homemade outdoor hockey rink, with a scoreboard made out of 2 by 4's, plywood and nails, flood lights, boards surrounding the rink, and a big old open farm land field.

Looking down rink, you saw the score net, the plywood sign, the flood lights illuminating the rink, reflections off the sparkle in the snow, snow flakes slowly fluttering softly down towards the ice, and 6 foot tall men, skating, pumping their legs up and down the rink shovelling the few inches of snow that accumulated within the first 15 minutes since we had last cleared the rink.
This was the epitome of Canadian winter. Thus I was inspired. I went home and created sparkles, silver, white, grey, all things beautiful and snow and crisp necklaces. Layered with all types of different chains and beads that sparkle and shone that matched the night time sky and the sparkle white crisp snow. I have a show this saturday, and valentines day is coming up! So stay tuned this week for some updates on the website, www.GotHattitude.com, for your mama, girlfriend, sister, or friend!

Here's me and a friend venturing out in the -25 degree weather yesterday!

Have you seen my ghost today?

I've got an addiction. And the addiction is going to my brain.
I'm craving everything vintage. Not that I wasn't already before, but now especially I can't get enough of the high you get searching through thrift stores, and finding the perfect item.

I am also loving the sexy geek look. The big framed glasses, the high wasted skirts, and the knee high socks with a cute pair of closed toe thick clog heels. Tres magnifique!

This pair of glasses is really similar to the ones I just got prescribed. They even have the same similar key hole nose hold, although mine are a bit more caramel, honey coloured with a tinge of red.

This winter I love that the fashionistas are going for warmth. I've always been a firm believer in keeping warm in the winter. Under my skirts, I often pair my tights with a pair of leggings as well to keep toasty warm! I love this photo of all things wonderful in the sweater world.
Photo from Forever 21.

Hope everyone's Christmas was Fabulous, and New Years was even better. I hope you spent it well. They say how you spend New years eve is how the rest of your year is going to go!
It's January, so I guess it's time to get the countdown on for Cottaging season...I say that as I look out my window with the sparkle of snow flakes falling slowly. ha
